A guide to using the Automotive Supplier Finder

No. All we ask is that you have a connection to the automotive industry, but there are no set restrictions as to who can register as a buyer or a supplier on the service.

SMMT members get a discount on the subscription free. If you are an SMMT Member and would like to subscribe to the service please email support@autosupplierfinder.com or call 0207 344 9234.

We have an online profile editing tool, the ASFedit (formerly MIDedit), which allows registered users to log in securely to edit their company's profile. Simply go to www.autosupplierfinder.com ASFedit and register or log in. If you have not registered for this service before you will need to enter your work e-mail address.Our system will then verify your email's domain and locate companies that you have authority to edit.

If your company email has not been recognised, you will need to add your company. You will then be provided with several tabs to complete with as much information as possible before submitting to the ASF team to approve.

We may on occasion need to speak to you regarding any changes you have made before setting the company profile to live status.

Please note that team need to approve all edits to company profiles before they go live in the system the following day.

There are currently no charges to use this service. As a not for profit organisation, any charges that we decide to make will be purely to help SMMT maintain the database, continue to develop and provide this invaluable service to the industry.

No. You will need to contact the main contact for the account for your company by email, or you can contact us to let us know you want to be added to the account. This is simply for security reasons we need to confirm that you work for the company and that it is ok for more users to be added to the account. Only the main contact at each account can add and remove users and change the entitlements. We can do this with the permission of the account holder.

From the homepage www.autosupplierfinder.com you can register as a new user. You can then enter the postcode of your business address, which will check if we already have a user at your company registered to an account. Once it confirms that you are a completely new user, the system will ask you to complete the registration form. If we already have a user registered, we will provide the contact email of that user, as only they will have the permission to add users to the same account.

Please enter your email which you believe to be registered into the log in page under 'forgotten password'. The system should automatically send you a reminder with the password. If no password was entered upon registering you will be issued with a randomly generated one.

Please make sure you check your junk or spam filters, if you still do not receive an alert please send us an email from the address which you believe to be the registered email along with your full company name and postcode and your name. We will then reissue your password and username to this email. Contact us at admin@autosupplierfinder.com.

If your company is already listed in the database when you register, you are advised to check your company profile, contact details and product and service categories by registering at www.autosupplierfinder.com/asfedit . Here, you can review the information we have on your business which is then used to help match your company capabilities to the requirements and criteria of the buyers' business enquiries.

You can make changes to your company profile which will alert the ASF team and they will set the new profile information live. Some of the information will be visible at www.autosupplierfinder.com . Please allow 2 working days for your company profile to go live.

The most common cause for not being able to see the RFQ, is that the system has registered a different postcode to the one you have entered when you registered. The system assigns the users by postcode. You will have received the RFQ based on a postcode that we have in the directory. This is the postcode that needs to be registered when you become a member. If your business postal code has changed, please let us know and we can temporarily give you access to your RFQ whilst we make the changes to your business profile and account.

We encourage all suppliers to keep their details up-to-date to avoid this.

Another reason for this is that the buyer has chosen to withdraw the request which will put the RFQ in the archived section. You will not be able to respond once an RFQ has been archived.

The system is case sensitive so, depending on how you registered for the service this will be the same when you need to return to your account. If you are having problems logging in please let us know and we can issue you with your exact password and log in.

Please note that your ASF company account log in is initially different to the one you are automatically sent for accessing the ASFedit ( a randomly generated password). Once you are logged in to your ASF account it is possible for you to synchronise these two passwords in the 'my details' area on the account. If you registered for the ASFedit before setting up an ASF account, your username and password will work for ASF too.

If you registered for the ASF service before 1st of September 2009, your company details would have been added if you returned a completed data collection form, however after the 1st of September 2009, all registered users are required to complete their details online. If you registered before this date but did not return your data collection form, your details would not have been added. You can add your company details using our new online tool MIDedit at www.autosupplierfinder.com/MIDedit

We may not have received or uploaded your company details and categories yet. The information that you provide us with needs to be accurate in order to be tagged to the correct product or service categories.

If you feel your company has not come up in a particular search please let us know the search criteria you entered and we will change your company details accordingly.

The buyers are encouraged to provide as much information as possible when issuing requests for quotation, but sometimes vital information is missed out. If you need more information before completing a quotation, please let us know exactly what questions you would like answered and we will return to the buyer on your behalf to get these questions answered.

If you have any comments regarding fields for the request for quotation which might be of use to all suppliers, please let us know.

The system allows buyers to upload any drawings they like; it could be that you do not have the correct software to support the format that they have uploaded. Please let us know if you do have problems as we may have a common format version of the drawings to send to you in an email.

Only the main contact at each company site can add new users to the account. If you are not sure who the main contact is please email us as and we will confirm that you can be added to the account.

If you are the main contact for the account, you can add users by entering their email address (which will check they are not already registered to this account or any other account) then follow the online instructions.

The Motor Industry Directory (MID) was a book produced up until 2008. It ceased publication when we launched the online version which is now the Automotive Supplier Finder. Designed and developed around the SMMT's automotive database of companies spanning across over 4,000 product and service classifications, it can be searched by entering keywords or by navigating through product categories.

Based on the MID we have provided a service which enables buyers to issue request for quotations (RFQ) through the system to suppliers that manufacture or supply the products/services buyers are seeking.

The Automotive Supplier Finder can be used to source a variety of products and/or services, for example:
electrical connectors to die cast mouldings;
hazard warning beacons to safety equipment;
consultancy to business data reporting.

ASF is provided by the leading UK automotive trade association, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited, and aims to bring innovative and practical services to support and strengthen our industry.

It's the largest automotive industry specific supplier finder service in the UK which offers a free service to purchasing professionals looking for suppliers and new supplies throughout the UK and Europe.

The database holds details on companies across over 4,000 product and service classifications in the automotive industry.

The Automotive Supplier Finder can be used to source anything from:
electrical connectors to die cast mouldings;
hazard warning beacons to safety equipment;
consultancy to business data reporting.

Searchable product and service categories are listed as below.

We have a variety of categories but are also constantly updating the schema upon which the database is designed on. New categories are being added on a weekly basis, so if you feel your company offer something to the automotive industry that we may not cover yet, please let us know and we will try and add it to the database.

When you register and add your company profile to the database, your company will automatically receive a basic entry. SMMT and certain members of partnered companies will receive an enhanced entry. An enhanced bold entry has the basic information plus a logo or image of your choice, brand names, and free text business activity.

We are developing functions to offer further enhanced entries which will include priority listings, downloads and banner advertising. More information on these features soon.

You will be made aware of any charges with notice and there will be no obligation to make any payments unless you have chosen to subscribe. More information will be made available should any changes to the service be made.

When an RFQ is issued by a buyer, all suppliers that have been matched as being able to supply the product or service requested, will receive an alert email to the contact(s) designated as main contact AND supplier contact. Please check we have the correct email by checking in the 'my details' section of the company ASF account. You will also receive reminders before the expiry date (set by the buyer) is reached.

Unfortunately the information that you provided when you registered for the old Motor Industry Directory for the first time is no longer enough to be able to become a part of the ASF service. The new registration form, once complete, will provide us with enough information to be able to enter your details. The registration should only take a couple of minutes.

After browsing the database using either of the search tools on the home page, you are then given the option of sending a request for information (RFI). This option allows you to request information from the suppliers. When you view a company profile you will also have the option to send an RFI rather than a more detailed request for quotation.

Buyers can issue public requests for quotation to suppliers but if you want to hide the company name you should mark it as private.

We have introduced over 1500 overseas companies to the database and working with our trade association counterparts, we are progressively adding more companies from Central and Eastern Europe and beyond.

At the moment these companies are not contactable via the ASF quick RFQ service, but you can search by company name, product and service to locate non UK companies and view their company profiles.

Please let us know if you cannot supply the product/service either by e-mail with the RFQ title in the subject field or by calling 020 7344 1611 and we can make sure your details are correct and remove you from the reminder alert system.

Alternatively, use the online form to let us know you cannot meet the request and log on to the MIDedit at www.autosupplierfinder.com/MIDedit on to edit your company's profile to ensure you receive the appropriate business opportunities. /p>

You must return your quotation through the online system before the expiry date is reached. If you log in and notice that you can no longer see the RFQ, this means that the request has closed and you will not be able to return the quote. If you responded before the expiry date, the buyer will not be able to view their responses until that date has been reached. The buyer is left to decide whether they would like to contact you or not. They are provided with your contact details, the price you have offered and the details you have entered.

We encourage buyers to provide us with feedback, with which we can try and see if there are any notable reasons for why your company may not have been chosen for business.

We do a lot of searching for our members outside of the online system, therefore some proactive filtering may happen to provide our members with a more accurate search result. It may be that we do not have the correct details for your business, so please check your profile to ensure that we have the correct company capabilities and products and services that you can supply as well as the correct contact details.

Generally we try to stick to the buyers requested expiry dates, although sometimes there can be some leeway, we will always have to check with the buyer before extending the expiry date on their behalf and encourage suppliers to respond within the deadline.

Once you have logged in, you can view the user account details in ‘My Details’ if you are the main contact. Here you can change your email, contacts and passwords and synchronise the editing tool password too. If you have any problems, we can administer any account details on your behalf.

Each site has to register as separate from one another (because of the way the postcode system works), but we can then link the sites together so that the main contact has control over all the accounts.

For more information on how to do this please contact us on 0207 344 9234 or email support@autosupplierfinder.com.

If a buyer requests a supplier to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) form before releasing a drawing, this will be made apparent as a link in the RFQ form from the buyer.

Before suppliers can view any drawings attached by the buyer, it will need to be downloaded, printed it off, signed and returned to admin@autosupplierfinder.com or returned by fax to 020 7344 1675. we will then process the nda and give the supplier permission to access the drawings.

This option allows you to select companies that you would like to omit from your RFQ search results. The user can exclude against 'All RFQs' or 'Just this RFQ'. The option to remove the company from the exclusion list is possible.

Please allow 2 working days from the time you submitted a pending profile update. The ASF team will try and set the profile live as soon as possible, or will be in contact if there are any problems with your submission within this time. There are certain times in the year that it make take us longer, but please bear with us. If your profile has not appeared, please do not duplicate your company information, please call us on 0207 344 9234 to check the progress of the profile.

We do not offer advertising space on this site. If you are interested in exhibition opportunities at our events, please visit http://www.smmt.co.uk/smmt-membership/member-services/business-opportunities/exhibition-opportunities/exhibition-opportunities-external-events for more information.
